TAKING
CARE OF YOUR CAR
It's important
that you take reasonable steps to safeguard your car. Your insurance policy
requires this of you and, if you are careless when leaving your car, then
you may not be able to claim for its theft.
YOU SHOULD
CONSIDER THE FOLLOWING:
- Have your windows
etched with your registration number as a deterrent
- Have an approved
alarm/immobiliser professionally fitted (Ask your insurer for a recommendation)
- If you go out at
night, park in a well-lit place. Always garage your car overnight if
possible
- In a ticket exit
car park, take your ticket with you
- Don't leave insurance
or other documents in your car
- If you have to
leave property in your car, lock it out of sight in your boot. Estate
cars are particularly vulnerable and property should be carefully hidden
- Obviously, remove
the ignition key - even at petrol stations
- Close all windows
and sunroof tightly
- Use anti-theft
devices - eg, a steering lock. A visual deterrent is better than none
at all
- Lock every access
to your car - even at home or at a petrol station
- Never leave young
children or animals alone in a parked car. You run the risk of theft
with windows or sunroof open and overheating with windows and sunroof
closed
- Lock doors and
boot whilst driving, for security, in areas where you feel at risk
REMEMBER:
Financial loss is bad enough - the shock and inconvenience are often worse.
