| WHAT
DO YOU DO IF YOU HAVE A CAR ACCIDENT |
|
|
Stop
and remain at the scene of the accident. Follow the advice given
in the Highway Code.
|
|

|
Call
999 if emergency services are needed. Keep calm and clearly state
the location. Although not all accidents need to be reported,
remember that in certain circumstances the Police will need to
be called. You must ensure that you fulfil your legal requirements
under the provisions of the Road Traffic Act.

|

|
Be
careful what you say. Do not make any admission of liability.
Exchange names, addresses, insurers names and certificate numbers.
Do not give or offer any money. For detailed advice refer to the
Road Traffic Act, or contact ABERCORN INSURANCE BROKERS LTD.

|
Draw
a sketch of the scene - take photographs if possible. Note everything
you can - independent witnesses - vehicle descriptions and registration
numbers - location -damage - accident circumstances.

Notify
your insurer's 24-hour Claims Helpline of the accident as soon
as possible. They will normally direct you to one of their local
APPROVED REPAIRERS - a written Estimate is not normally required
by your insurer if an APPROVED REPAIRER is used. If your vehicle
is unroadworthy (and you have Comprehensive cover) the Helpline
will arrange for your damaged vehicle to be uplifted. They will
also advise you if they require an Accident Report Form to be
completed (some insurers do not require one nowadays - your telephone
call to the Helpline can be sufficient). In addition, if your
cover is Comprehensive and your vehicle is repairable they will
inform you of their entitlement to a Courtesy Car while your own
vehicle is being repaired.
If you have purchased a Motor Legal Protection Policy (Legal Expenses
Insurance) and the accident was not your fault, staff at Abercorn
Insurance Brokers will be pleased to advise you of the appropriate
procedures.

With
a motor legal protection policy, legal advisers will give you
advice, and if possible, take action to recover your uninsured
losses (insurance excess, hire car costs, personal injury, damage
to personal effects etc. from a negligent third party). If you
have been injured, they will appoint a solicitor to help you.
If you do not have such a policy ask your ABERCORN INSURANCE BROKERS
LTD Adviser for advice.
