Situated 30 minutes drive north-east of the capital city, Bratislava, and only one hour thirty minutes drive from Vienna, Trnava, the regional capital, is one of the most inviting towns in Slovakia with a population of over 70,000. Eighteen secondary schools and two universities help enable the city satisfy the intellectual capital requirements of current and future industries and the combination of extensive sporting and cultural attractions enhances key quality of life issues - giving rise to the city’s nickname, little Rome.

With one of the highest population densities in Slovakia and strategic gateway status courtesy of the Region’s common border with Austria, Czech Republic and Hungary, Trnava is playing host to an increasing number of word class companies like Sony and Kimberly Clark.

The Region has a rich industrial heritage and is particularly strong in pharmaceutical production, consumer electronics, automotive components, textiles, polyester along with glass-fibre and offers significant tourism opportunities to further develop several spa centres of which Piestany has the highest international profile. Tourism investment opportunities also abound in the southern part of the region bordered by the river Danube.

Manufacturing accounts for 34% of the working population followed by agriculture (16%) and Public Administration (14%). Around 4,000 are enrolled within the region’s two universities and in the city of Trnava almost 20% of the working population are graduates.

Major domestic companies include Skloplast employing 1,300 producing glass fibre, Slovenske Elektrane employing almost 3,000 in power generation, Taz Sipox with around 1,000 making small commercial vehicles and Zos Trnava employing over 1,000 refurbishing railway wagons.

Principal foreign investors and firms with foreign participation include Drotovna with 2,500 employees engaged in wire extrusion, Sony with 650 producing deflection yokes and colour TVs, Kimberly Clark with around 500 people producing disposable surgical gowns, DSG Draxlmaier employing 600 manufacturing electricity control apparatus, Sachs Trnava engaging 400 in automotive components, ZVL-LSA with 300 also in automotive components and bearings, Tetra Pak with around 200 in packaging and Technoconsulting Texicom engaging 1,500 in cotton weaving.

Unlike the neighbouring countries with which Slovakia competes for foreign direct investment, manufacturing and the established infrastructure to underpin the activities, is not concentrated in a few territories. Rather, Slovakia has a well balanced manufacturing base with an even distribution of production activity across the eight regions as outlined below.
